ARTEM VASSILIEV was born in Kazakhstan in 1974 and has lived in Moscow since 1980. He started studying music at the age of 12 and then went on to do his principle studies in composition with Yuri Vorontsov and electro-acoustic music with Anatoly Kisselev at Gnessins College (1991-95) and then with Vorontsov at the Moscow State Conservatoire (1995-2002).
He has also been granted a full fees scholarship (2001-2002) to the post-graduate department at the Royal Academy of Music in London where he completed MMus in Composition course with distinction. He has worked as a tutor in electro-acoustic music at Gnessins' College and as a teacher at the sound engineering department at Gnessins' Academy. He has received the ORS award in 2003 and he is finishing his studies on a PhD programme at the Royal Academy of Music with Brian Elias this year. He also teaches instrumentation and music technology at the Royal Academy of Music.
In 2001 he was awarded the Russian President's Special Prize for young composers and joined the Russian Composers’ Union. He also was awarded Vladimir Potanin Scholarship to support his studies in London, the Jo Johnson Bursary funded by the Hinrichsen Foundation to attend Dartington International Summer School 2002, the Pullen Memorial Prize 2002, Mosco Carner Award (2002-2003), 2 Prizes (2004-2006) from the Friends of the Royal Academy of Music and a grant from Bliss Trust (2006).
He has composed many works in both traditional and electro-acoustic media. "The Ways" and "Gestures" were awarded prizes in the Residence Section of the 23rd and 25th Bourges International Electro-acoustic Competition. Following these awards, he studied in studios in France, Hungary and England.
Other works have been performed at the Moscow Autumn Festival, Homecoming and Moscow Forum music festivals and also at international festivals in France, Great Britain (London PLG Young Artists 1999, 2005 in Purcell room, Bath Music Festival 2001, Dartington Music Festival 2002, in Wigmore concert hall 2002, Spitalfields Music Festival 2003, 2005 (London), in Scotland (Discoveries 1998), Sweden (ICEM Assembly), Holland (Gaudeamus Festival 2001, 2003), USA (San-Francisco, Wired strings festival 2003), Switzerland (Archipel 2004) and in several other European countries.
Artem Vassiliev has received commissions from the Royal Academy of Music (UK), Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Cologne Sinfonietta (Germany), New London Singers (UK), Homecoming Music Festival (Russia), Paul Dresher Electroacoustic Band (USA), The London Children's Ballet, Spitalfields Festival, Michala Petri. His works have been recorded on CD and released by BMG, Black Box Music, Quartz, Electroshock Records, the Royal Academy of Music, broadcast live on the BBC radio 3 and published by Warwick Music, Choir and Organ Music Magazine.
He has written two ballets for the London Children's Ballet, both were staged at Peacock Theatre on London West End in May 2005 and in May 2007.
