Don Bateman started playing the cornet at the age of 12, later switching to the trumpet. After 3 years at the Royal College of Music (ARCM Teaching Diploma) Don undertook various freelance engagements. Later a Certificate of Education, gained at Trent Park (now part of Middlesex University) led to brass teaching along with an eclectic mix of playing work.
Don`s versatility, and particularly his jazz facility, was put to good use during his time of 5 years as Principal trumpet with the BBC Scottish Radio Orchestra. This period also involved the study of orchestration and a number of compositions and arrangements for the SRO.
Following a 12 year stint as trumpet specialist at the City of Leeds College of Music saw the completion of a Bachelor of Music (honours) degree and the publication, by Music Sales, of The Complete Trumpet Player.
Upon moving back to the South of England Don taught in the state and private sectors, including Kent Academy, a centre of excellence for talented students in the County. Along with theory, aural and composition groups, Don enjoyed guiding several improvisation classes and a brass ensemble, for which he wrote a number of pieces, including McCann Can March and Pent-Up, both of which have become features for trombone and tuba in a brass band setting.
It is inevitable that Don`s jazz background should be reflected in his compositions. In the 1990s two sets of jazz-influenced recorder pieces were produced for the Dolce (London Pro Musica) label and some of these were included in the Trinity/Guildhall and Associated Board examination lists.
Don, having retired some years ago, now lives near the sea in Hampshire where he spends more time on composition and is expanding his musical horizons.
