Stefan comes from a family of musicians, his grandfather the Principal Conductor and his mather, a pianist.

In 1921 he was born in Darmstadt, Germany. He studied music in Berlin, Florence and later at the Royal School of Music, London. He composed with Herbert Howells and played Bassoon with Archie Camden.

He was an active freelance Bassoonist in London, mainly with Chamber Orchestras, and taught and tutored Wind Groups, Youth Orchestras and Summer Schools. He wrote music in such a way as to give players as much pleasure as the listeners.

Among his works are pieces for Brass and Woodwind Ensembles, Educational Music; including children's records and compositions for School and Youth Orchestras. His more serious works include a Concerto for trumpet and strings, a Wind Quartet and a String Trio.
