Gary D. Belshaw, Ph.D., is in his tenth year on the faculty at Wayland Baptist University's School of Music. He teaches the Aural Skills component of Music Theory, Music Composition, Orchestration, and Music Technology. He is also a studio and faculty accompanist. His extracurricular activities are diverse - everything from providing dinner music at the piano to emceeing the concerts of the Plainview Symphony Orchestra.
Dr. Belshaw's original compositions have been performed in Spain, England, and Russia, as well as in California, Nevada, Texas, Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. His most recent commissioned work, Dreams and Realities, The Centennial Anthems of Wayland Baptist University, was premiered by the International Choir and Wayland Singers, Scott Herrington, conducting, as part of the university's Centennial Celebration. His "Wind Sculptures" for Trombone and Band was composed as part of his doctoral dissertation (Ph.D., Texas Tech, 2000), and was premiered by the Texas Tech University Symphonic Winds, conducted by Dr. John Cody Birdwell. Texas Tech University Professor of Trombone Don Lucas was the soloist for the premiere, as well as for performances of Wind Sculptures with the Houston Symphonic Band and with the U. S. Naval Academy Band. Performers of his music for brass also include Trombones de Costa Rica, The Houston Symphonic Band, Christian Griego, Jeff Kurka, Shauna Satrom and Jared Lantzy.
Dr. Belshaw composed his first march, Oldest and Finest, in honor of the 150th Anniversary of the U. S. Naval Academy Band. The ensemble premiered the march during its 150thAnniversary Gala Concert on May 9, 2003. The Band recently recorded the march for inclusion on a 4 CD set of band music celebrating the band's 150th Anniversary.
