Simon Hogg (1958) commenced trombone lessons with his uncle, C.S.McCoy and later joined his father in the Coventry Salvation Army Band. He graduated to the National Youth Orchestra and the Royal Academy of Music, London where he won many major wind and brass prizes. During a post graduate year at Birmingham University he became a founder member of The Fine Arts Brass with whom he has performed two thousand concerts, visited over sixty countries (often for the British Council), performed 150 BBC radio and TV broadcasts and made 25 commercial recordings. The Ensemble has commissioned seventy works by leading British composers including Malcolm Arnold, John Casken, Michael Nyman, Robin Holloway, William Matthias, Graham Fitkin, Michael Finissy, Tim Souster, Philip Wilby, Roxanna Panufnik, Guy Woolfenden, Jonty Harrison, Colin Matthews, Giles Swayne, Michael Berkley etc.
Other orchestras and ensembles Simon has played with include the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, The English Symphony Orchestra, The Czech National Orchestra, The Zurich Chamber Orchestra, The Turkish National Symphony Orchestra, The Royal Shakespeare Company, The London Trombone Sound, London Trombone Chorale, Nemo Brass, Cambrian Brass.
In 1996 Simon was made an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music. He is a Professor of Trombone at the Royal College of Music, Junior Department. He lives in rural Warwickshire and enjoys modern art, cinema, travel, reading and visiting local pubs.
