Steve Halsey was born in 1958 in East Yorkshire and began playing the trumpet at the age of 9. Growing up in the Yorkshire Brass band tradition and later playing in Symphony orchestras and Dance bands gave him a wealth of experience in different fields of music. At 16 he gave the European Premiere of the Lovelock Trumpet Concerto with the City of Hull Youth Orchestra.
Steve then went on to study for a degree in Music at Huddersfield School of Music where he graduated with a 1st in composition.
As a Director of Music in 3 different Secondary schools in the NorthEast of England, Steve has continued to compose music in a wide range of styles and for players of all abilities. His works have included 10 Stage musicals, string and brass music and flexible arrangements for school ensembles.
In 1997 Steve was appointed Music Inspector for Newcastle and in 2001 created and became Director of the Newcastle Music Service. During this time he has continued to write music for all occasions, including a Royal Fanfare played for Her Majesty the Queen on her official opening of the New Central Library. Other major works have included a 10 book set of songs for the Sing Up Strategy and the 4 Pocket Trumpet Files for the Widening Opportunities initiative at KeyStage 2.
In 2009 Steve's Trumpet Concerto received its World Premiere at the Sage Gateshead and other compositions for professional players includes String Quartets, a Concerto for Flugalhorn and Brassband written for Grimethorpe Colliery band and the moving Recitatives and Arias written for the Holocaust Memorial concert in 2010.
