Our pioneering music education initiative - BOLD AS - shows music in education improves children’s confidence, musical skills and behaviour.
Commissioned by Deal Festival Education project, supported by Kent Music, and pBone, the report found improvement in behaviour and capacity to concentrate, marked improvement in confidence and very significant improvement in musical skills.
More than 100 primary school students aged 9 to 11 years old took part over the course of a year. The BOLD AS project spanned more than 80 hours of musical activities including a series of pBone and pTrumpet workshops, with top-class musicians, and performances in school and at public concerts.
The report highlighted it was very significant that some of the low achievers in class were high achievers in this project. At Sandown Primary School, for one particular child, involvement in BOLD AS has been life-changing. The child was very lacking in confidence prior to this and now has his hand up to answer questions and wants to be involved.
Phil White, Musical Director of BOLD AS said, ‘Concentration, self-discipline, commitment, communication and confidence are transferable skills that as musicians we naturally learn and apply to all aspects of our lives.’ Through brass playing, the schoolchildren have begun to learn skills- beyond musicianship- that will stand them in excellent stead for the rest of their lives. pTrumpet and pBone have formed not just part of their music education, but their education as a whole.
“The project was engineered specifically with the ‘fun’ element in the forefront. The use of brightly coloured plastic instruments had an immediate positive impact on everyone.”
Mr Ian Rowden, the headmaster of Aylesham Primary School, said, ‘It has been a real pleasure to watch the children learning to master the instruments and a bonus that it has impacted their overall learning process in such a positive way. It is vital to ensure music education is an integral part of the curriculum, particularly as we have witnessed the benefits first-hand!’
Chris Fower, Education Director of WMG said: “It’s been a privilege to be a part of this project. WMG is committed to innovating, developing, producing and nurturing brilliant musical experiences and we are delighted our own first-hand experiences of the benefits of music in education have been formally acknowledged in this industry-leading report.”
