pBuzz Primary Resources: Episode Two Superheroes

Greetings, educators!  Are you ready to don your capes and dive into the world of pitch with your primary class?

Susie Riddell, your pBuzz ambassador, is here to guide you through the Superheroes topic, focusing on the highs and lows of musical pitch.

This is the second episode of the six-part series of the free pBuzz Primary Resources. These expertly crafted resources are packed with everything educators in England and Wales need to deliver the entire National Curriculum for Music at KS1. Watch the overview videos and then use the resources to save the day...or just make some fun Superhero-themed music!

This Superheroes topic has five weeks of material. Teaching pBuzz outside of England and Wales? These overview videos and the free lesson plans will give you plenty of inspiration for delivering whole-class music lessons to budding learners.

Before we start, do give the planning documents a once-over for a quick overview.

Pitch Perfect: Highs, Lows, and Melodies

Pitch in music is all about how high or low a note sounds. It's the backbone of melody and harmony. But, here's a twist: in our Superhero saga, we'll be focusing on high and low notes, not volume. Remember, going up in pitch doesn't mean getting louder – a common mix-up among young maestros!

Lesson Breakdown: From Exploring Pitches to Creating Heroic Tunes

1. Exploring F and G: In our first lesson, we dive into the world of F and G on the pBuzz. If some pupils struggle, it's not a sign of misunderstanding; it's often a technical hiccup. Use hand signs to demonstrate the ups and downs of the Superman theme tune as a fun pitch test!

2. The pBuzz Superhero Song: Lesson two challenges students to blend F and G into our own pBuzz superhero song. Struggling to switch between singing and playing? Split the class into singers and players – problem solved!

3. Copy Back Time: Remember the copy back method from episode one? It's back in lesson three. Whether you use the guide track or go acapella, this lesson is all about echoing pitches in unison

4. Crafting a Superhero Theme: Unleash the creativity in lesson four. Let students freely mix and match sounds to create their superhero theme tune. Just a heads-up: agree on a 'stop' signal unless you fancy a never-ending superhero symphony!

5. Consolidation and Challenge: The final lesson is a consolidation and a test – can your pupils play along with the backing track without the guide? If things go awry, no stress – it's all part of the learning journey.

Up, Up and Away with pBuzz!

There you have it, super teachers! You're now armed with all you need to embark on this superhero-themed musical journey. Remember, teaching pitch with pBuzz isn't just educational; it's an adventure of heroic proportions.

Adam is the Content Manager at pBone Music. This should mean that he’s the ideal person to write about himself, but he finds boasting in the third person a little awkward. He honed his word wizardry with a degree in English Language and Literature at the University of Leeds. He has since written copy for clients and businesses across the land, from awards to something beginning with “z”. He also spent a number of years as a musician. He has written pop songs and even jingles for kids, performed more first dances at weddings than you could shake a pBuzz at, and once played a gig for a pie company at The Etihad Stadium in Manchester. When he’s not reminiscing about those good old days, you might find Adam enjoying the football (although as an Everton fan, that can be difficult). He also loves spending time with his partner, Jen, and his family and friends, and sincerely hopes they feel the same way.
