Grab your planning documents, and let's chart a course for musical discovery!

The Pulse of the Cosmos: What Is Tempo?

Our musical odyssey revolves around tempo, the heartbeat of music. Now, we're venturing further, introducing sudden and gradual tempo changes. Get ready to explore 'ralentando' (gradual slowing down) and 'accelerando' (gradual speeding up)!

Lesson Highlights: From Slow Spacewalks to Shooting Stars

1. Spacewalk Movements: Begin with tempo exploration through movement. As the iconic 2001: A Space Odyssey theme plays, have pupils mimic slow astronaut movements. This activity helps them internalise the slowness of the music.

2. Shooting Stars Tune: Next, tackle the verse of Shooting Stars on the pBuzz. Begin at a leisurely pace and gradually increase speed. Provide a safety net for those struggling with the full-speed version, allowing them to set their tempo.

3. Space Sound Improvisation: Here's where creativity takes off. Challenge pupils to replicate computer-generated space sounds using only their voices. Offer examples like beeps and otherworldly warbles to ignite their imagination.

4. Crafting Blast Off: This lesson focuses on creating a piece with both accelerando and ralentando. Regular check-ins are crucial to ensure these elements are included and practised.

5. Consolidation Challenge: The final test is playing Shooting Stars along with the backing track. If turbulence hits, no worries! You can always circle back to the guide track.

A Musical Universe Awaits

You're now equipped to navigate the space-themed tempo topic. Remember, it's about the journey, not just the destination. Let your class's creativity soar to interstellar heights!

Adam is the Content Manager at pBone Music. This should mean that he’s the ideal person to write about himself, but he finds boasting in the third person a little awkward. He honed his word wizardry with a degree in English Language and Literature at the University of Leeds. He has since written copy for clients and businesses across the land, from awards to something beginning with “z”. He also spent a number of years as a musician. He has written pop songs and even jingles for kids, performed more first dances at weddings than you could shake a pBuzz at, and once played a gig for a pie company at The Etihad Stadium in Manchester. When he’s not reminiscing about those good old days, you might find Adam enjoying the football (although as an Everton fan, that can be difficult). He also loves spending time with his partner, Jen, and his family and friends, and sincerely hopes they feel the same way.
