Experiments with sound that you can try at home

10 Fun Sound Facts

  • There is no sound in space because there is nothing for the sound waves to bounce off.
  • An echo is produced when the sound waves are bounced off of an object, rather than being absorbed.
  • The loudest natural sound on Earth is a volcano erupting.
  • Thunder is the sound produced by the rapid heating of air by a lightning strike.
  • The sound of a whip cracking is made when the whip is travelling faster than the speed of sound.
  • Hot and cold water make different noises.
  • Sound travels 4 times faster in water than it does in air.
  • Dogs hear higher-pitched sounds than people so they can hear some sounds that are so high, people can not even hear them.
  • Dolphins can hear sounds underwater from as far as 15 miles away.
  • Whale voices can travel up to 479 miles through the ocean's water so they can communicate with each other across huge distances.
