We take a look through the archives to an incredible day of music in 2017, with Lancashire Music Service.

On Sunday 29th October 2017, approx 60 young brass players took part in a very enjoyable and exciting day of music making.

The event was held at Lostock Hall Academy in Preston, from 10 am - 4 pm, organised by Lancashire Music Service and led by Helen Minshall. Leyland Band sponsored 3 tutors; James Nash (cornet) Ashley Jeffers (baritone) and Chris Doran (tuba), and Minshall Music LTD sponsored horn tutor Neil Raisbeck.

These outstanding tutors worked alongside the regular team of Lancashire Music Service tutors, Brian Taylor (cornet), Alastair Burrows (trombone) and Tony Harrison (percussion) to deliver a high-impact and enjoyable morning of workshops, working on the march “Loyal and True”, hymn “Deep Harmony”, and the theme from “Rocky”.

In the afternoon the group split into an advanced section that tackled the Hanz Zimmer theme tune from the film “Backdraft”, whilst the younger players took part in a “Plastic Brass” workshop with Helen Minshall. They spent the first half hour exploring the pBuzz, using a variety of resources. All were given a chance to improvise using a 12-bar blues backing track, and by the end of the session they could play “When The Saints Go Marching In”.

The group then moved on to pBone minis, and managed very well, playing “Let Me Entertain You” and “Eye Of The Tiger” in 3 parts. The performance at the end of the day was full of energy and enthusiasm, and well received by the audience. pBone minis were provided for the event by pBone Music, and pBuzzes were provided by Minshall Music LTD.
